Chopstick have been around for thousands of years. Thought to be invented in China in roughly 400 BC and were most likely sticks used to retrieve food from cooking pots. The use of chopsticks then began to spread all over Asia to areas like Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. The Japanese originally only used chopsticks in rituals but eventually started to use them for everyday uses. The use of chopsticks was solidified by Confucius who was not a fan of knives. The use of chopsticks only rose as a result of Confusion ideas sweeping across China. Chopsticks were then brought to America by Chinese railroad workers used to using the utensils. They were also being used in Asian style restaurants all over the West Coast. This led to the chopstick becoming an important aspect of Asian dining and has been embedded in American Chinese food every since.
